The " COOKING " Metaphor

Brie Cheese with Walnut & Resin Bread Assembly

Brie cheese pair well with dried fruits, nuts and bread usually served in separate components. In my cooking or the assemblage of materials, I have used a ready-made or a prefab that is walnut and resin bread assembly , toast process it on both sides in the oven at 250 degrees C , before applying the brie cheese layer and toast process the final assembly again.

 Painting

An example of the cooking metaphor usage is the painting process or artwork making process where layers of materials and meanings are assembled together.

Software Coding

Yet another example of the cooking metaphor usage can be in software coding where a variety of coding snippets from various coders can be assembled together to serve a higher purpose program.

Syntax

Common syntax 1: " I have created the codes. " this is misleading as the coder does not create the coding language eg C# but only using the codes by organizing and assembling it . What the coder actually creates is the function or application using C# coding language.

Common syntax 2: " I have cooked up a story." meaning the story is bullshit.

Proposed syntax 3: " I have cooked up the codes. "  even though adding the preposition "up" implied bullshit but overall makes a better read.

Proposed syntax 4: " I have cooked up the painting." this means the artist merely assemble or reorganize the art materials and concepts/meanings using a painting process. What the artist really create is a visual experience.

Metaphor

The cooking metaphor can be used to give a procedural description of the Ideation or Creative Process in conjugation with the use of terms "assemblage" , "process" and "prefab" .

How to Cook People ?

Can I extend the cooking metaphor on people ?

Proposed syntax 4: " I have cooked up John."

This could mean "I have size John up." or " I have form a virtual assembly of John, his behaviors and desires , in short I know what makes John tick or I know John's language. The "product" here is more sinister and scheming , it could be served to John in a dish , a form of flavored text and gesture in order to influence him to action or non-action.

Final Submission of NYP project YouTube Video Link

Where To Go From Here

The application of the stop motion camera movement of the 1st person attending the Art Exhibition for the NYP school project last only 1 minute long. This is too short to test for the 1st person immersion. The next application video project should be at least 5 minutes.

One potential application can be a 360 HR orientation video where the new hire ( 1st person ) is being transported desk to desk to be introduced by the employee seated there who gives the new hire information about his or her name and job roles and responsibility.

Design of Experiment 03 and Preparing for Shoot

360 Art Gallery / Portfolio Experience

  • Artworks eg paintings are exhibited on the walls.

  • User experiences an art gallery tour in the room

  • Other application for this filming method include hotel room , retail space and real estate apartment.

    • The advantage of this method is the output is a non-interactive 360 video that can be uploaded to YouTube for free distribution. You don't really need an interactive video that usually comes with a subscription cost to host.

    • No cameraman included in the shot so that the user can have a clear 360 view of the space without any obstruction.

    • The user will be transported to all the rooms for this case ,when the 360 video plays from start to end. The user can however, scrub to the timeline of the video and pause it to spend more time in the 360 still environment.

Research on Similar Art Gallery Experience

National Art Council (NAC) do show case interactive 360 art gallery experience where the user is able to click on a hotpot to move to another location in the gallery or click on the pictures for more information about the artist. This is done by using Matterport Camera to 3D scan the environment and Matterport software to add hot spots and published the virtual interactive experience in the web.

Applying Experiment Results

  •  Use the horizontal movement of minimum 1 second to a maximum of 5 seconds.

  •  Instead of regular interval of one tile movement , any positioning error between 1-2 range is not noticeable by the user. This is useful because instead of positioning movement to the center of tiles , now i can position the movement to the center of the painting.

  • As for vertical movement I would like to have the user to view at the consistent height ( adult height ) throughout the experience as I would like to maintain the 1st person perspective without breaking the immersion by changing the viewing height drastically.  I approximate the tripod height to the height of my eye level using the selfie-stick extension add-on.

  • From the experiment changes in height is not noticeable if the user is in the center of the room and objects are further away.

  • Users might not notice if there are minor readjustment of tripod height during re-shoot of scene.

    Prepare for Shoot

  • Equipment : Extension to tripod , height of camera is at the eye level of an adult.
  • Material : 3M double sided tape to mount artworks on the wall.

    Design of Art Exhibition

The curator job in an Art Museum is to design the experience for the audience. There are many artworks in the museum collection and it is impossible for the museum to display them all. The curator's role is to rotate the collection to be displayed by deciding on which artworks goes on display based on a theme and period of the art exhibition.

I have to put on the hat of the curator to create an art exhibition for my 360 video production. I do have quite a bit of artworks including "sculptures",  however only the larger pieces and can be wall mounted are chosen. After that looking at what I have and the amount of wall space , I then think of the theme or story to connect the selected pieces , bearing in mind I planned only about 1 minute and there cannot be too much narration or VO ( voice over). The focus is the teleportation of the 1st person in the art exhibition room.

Draft Video 03 : Experiment 01 / 02 Scene done

Design of Experiment 01

  • The minimum horizonal movement is 2x in the same direction for the user to feel he has moved in that direction.
  • The movement is one tile distance away from the side walls , so that the user do not encounter a blank wall that causes disorientation. This holds true with the exception of the back wall. The back wall has indentation features.

Design of Experiment 02

  • Vertical movement is best viewed near to a featured wall or window , for the user to see that he is moving up or down .
  • A voice signal or command before the movement enhances the movement.

Improvements Done

  • Warning text is separated into 3 parts in sync with voice reading.
  • Better explanation to the experiment instruction.
  • Tripod removal using Adobe Photoshop.
